are they completely free or do they just start charging you for it after a year and you have to figure out how to get it canceled?

I have signed up for many free magazine subscriptions, and have never been charged after a year. If you mean they send you an invoice for the next year, often magazine subscriptions do that just to try to get you to sign-up again. I get those even for the paid subscriptions I have. I simply write cancel on the invoice and mail it back. Have NEVER had a problem after that!
